Research-based small businesses are encouraged to explore funding opportunities within the Department of Energy Office of Science FY2016 SBIR/STTR Phase I Topic Release.

The mission of the DOE Office of Science is the delivery of scientific discoveries and major scientific tools to transform our understanding of nature and to advance the energy, economic, and national security of the U.S.

Phase I project studies are intended to demonstrate proof of concept, or feasibility of a new project idea that responds to federal agency areas of interest. One company that has been highly successful in winning DOE SBIR awards is Arkansas Power Electronics International.

The full funding opportunity announcement will be issued Aug. 17, with an application due date of Oct. 19. Letters of intent will be due Sept. 8. DOE SBIR/STTR Phase I proposals fund maximum award sizes of $150,000 o $225,000, dependiendo del tema. Periods of performance for each project depend on the scope of the effort but will not exceed nine months.

Grant applications submitted by small businesses must be responsive to a specific topic and subtopic. There are 112 total subtopics within this DOE SBIR/STTR Phase I release, distributed as follows:

  • Oficina de Investigación Avanzada de Computación Científica – 3 temas (9 subtemas)
  • Oficina de Ciencias Básicas de la Energía – 13 temas (42 subtemas)
  • Oficina de Investigación Biológica y Ambiental – 4 temas (30 subtemas)
  • Oficina de Física Nuclear5 temas (31 subtemas)

DOE will do webinars on the topic groups, with the first one on Advanced Scientific Computing Research and Basic Energy Sciences taking place on July 30.
