The Green Corner Store
December 24th, 2013 by Mass Enthusiasm
Seeking to start a “green” store selling eco friendly products and services, Shelley Green became a client of the ASBTDC on the advice of a friend. A strong advocate of Little Rock’s Main Street corridor, Green opened The Green Corner Store on South Main in 2009. ASBTDC’s Michael Singleton assisted Green with the development of her business plan, market research and cash flow projections and was an ongoing resource through the startup phase.
The state’s self-proclaimed “first and only eco-lifestyle retail store” grew into a vital cog in the SOMA business district. Certified by Green America’s Green Business Network, The Green Corner Store stocks environmentally friendly home, pet, baby and beauty products and clothing and accessories, many of which are made locally or within Arkansas. With tall, dark-stained wood shelves and cases, the shop looks like a turn-of-the-century general store and features a marble and oak soda fountain and ice cream bar where Loblolly Creamery products are sold.
As her business matured, Green continued working with the ASBTDC in the areas of marketing and financial planning. Nancy Knighten, ASBTDC business consultant, assisted Green with her online presence and in 2013 helped her create a marketing plan built around Green’s knowledge and strengths as an eco-lifestyle expert.
Green has also participated in student projects coordinated by ASBTDC. UALR College of Business students in marketing and sustainability courses were paired with Green, learning from her as well as providing recommendations for her to consider implementing in The Green Corner Store.
Green’s hard work and consistency in her marketing, support of the South Main development and passion for preserving the planet have paved the way for a thriving business. Learn more at thegreencornerstore.com.
