June 3rd, 2015 by Rebecca Todd
The National Space Biomedical Research Institute has grant funding available through its Space Medical and Related Technologies Commercialization Assistance Program (SMARTCAP) for small businesses that develop biomedical products intended to support astronaut health in space.
SMARTCAP grants of $100,000 for each grantee must be support by a 100% match. Matching funding may be cash, in-kind support, or a combination of these options.
Eligible applicants must have a product that has achieved certain Product Readiness Levels. The PRL definitions can be found in the SMARTCAP program description.
The NSBRI has funded several products under SMARTCAP since 2011, including diagnostic devices that improve non-invasive assessment brain and ocular health; ultrasounds for back pain relief; and bioactive gel for healing wounds, among others. More details about previous SMARTCAP awardees can be found at SMARTCAP Grant Recipients.
To be considered during the upcoming grant cycle (May-October), small businesses must submit two-page initial applications by June 26.
