White House Hosts Demo Day for Innovators

August 25th, 2015 by Sarah Ricard

Aug. 4, 30 companies and 90 entrepreneurs from across the United States were represented at the first White House Demo Day.

Hosted by President Obama, Demo Day was the first event of its kind at the White House. Presidential Ambassadors for Global Entrepreneurship and other public and private leaders attended as well.

The scope of the event was not limited to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Entrepreneurs and innovators were encouraged to host their own Demo Day watch parties in order to participate in a live conversation.

NBC News described Demo Day as “a grown-up science fair meets the television show ‘Shark Tank.’”

Featured innovations included Cocoon Cam, a smart baby monitor; BlueOak, a service that harvests metals out of old smartphones and TVs; Base Directory, an app that helps military-connected families locate resources on military installations; Duolingo, an app that combines games with learning a foreign language; Bidr, an online platform that gives nonprofits additional fundraising options.
