A young company in Centerton is changing how builders approach construction.
Velent Steel Structures opened in January 2025, making an immediate impact on the area’s construction market.
After a successful career in data process automation and real estate, owner Kyle McGuire wanted to move into steel structure manufacturing.
The company combines innovative technology with sustainable building practices.
The Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center at the University of Arkansas supported his journey from concept to an operating business. McGuire benefited from customized consulting and market research from Catherine Corley.
“Kyle came to us through a referral from his banker,” said Corley, innovation and business consultant at the UA center. “We provided comprehensive market research and helped him develop a solid business plan that formed the foundation for his success.”
The partnership with ASBTDC proved crucial in securing capital financing. Corley and McGuire developed a strategic financing approach that, combined with his personal investment, resulted in approval for a Small Business Administration-backed startup loan.

Benefits of Steel
McGuire emphasizes that steel construction offers significant advantages over traditional wood framing, though the benefits require education to overcome initial cost concerns.
While steel materials carry higher upfront costs, projects can be completed in 40% less time that wood framing.
“Education is the key to converting builders and developers to steel,” McGuire said. “The upfront cost is higher for materials, but the long-term savings are substantial.”
In addition to their durability, the steel structures are non-combustible and immune to termites and mold.
The trusses can withstand winds up to 170 miles per hour, and the lifespan of the steel frame is over 300 years. There is also minimal waste – 1% to 2% compared to 10% for wood – and the precise manufacturing eliminates measurement challenges. Each pre-formed panel is marked for easy assembly, reducing the need for skilled labor and overall project costs.

Velent’s process begins with architectural designs that are converted into detailed 3D models showing every stud and beam. After approval, the designs are engineered and submitted for proper structural stamps, ensuring each project meets rigorous safety standards.
The sections connect as trusses, joists, and wall framing, creating structures that are straight, maintenance-free, non-toxic, and grounded against electrical storms.

In the first few months after opening, Velent Steel Structures demonstrated the viability of McGuire’s vision. The company met its initial revenue projections and achieved cash-flow positive status, a significant milestone for any startup.
As Velent continues to expand its reach across Arkansas and beyond, the company illustrates the potential for innovation to solve real-world problems while creating jobs and sustainable economic development in local communities.
