Tark’s Storied Brew, a new bookstore and coffee shop, opened on the square in downtown Marion, Ark. in September 2024. Owned by Michael and Carissa Tarkington, this unique spot blends literature and lattes, offering an inviting space for book lovers and coffee enthusiasts alike.

Tark’s features a diverse selection of books, spanning genres like fantasy, sci-fi, religion, and local history, including accounts of the Sultana disaster. A thoughtfully designed children’s section encourages young readers to discover the joy of reading, making it a welcoming atmosphere for all ages.
Michael, affectionately known as “Tark,” has always had a passion for books. With experience working in coffee shops and running an Etsy store, he had a simple yet powerful idea—why not combine both?
Recognizing that Crittenden County lacked a bookstore-coffee shop hybrid, he sought to confirm the viability of his vision.
The local Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center helped Tarkington validate his concept.
“I knew Jack,” he said, referring to Jack Poff Jr. of the ASBTDC at ASU Mid-South. “He was able to provide market and industry research that proved the concept could work.”
Poff helped the couple analyze industry trends and local market data to understand consumer spending habits. The ASBTDC also provided marketing and HR guidance to support the new business.
More Than Cups of Coffee and Paperbacks
Tark’s Storied Brew has quickly become a community hub. Even before the grand opening, a group of book lovers formed a book club in anticipation.
“Tark’s gives our book club the perfect environment—cozy, inspiring, and intellectual,” said Erin Nave, one of the club’s founding members. “We’ve been planning this for months, and now we have the ideal space for our discussions.”
For those looking for a literary adventure, Tark’s “Blind Date with a Book” is a fun option. Customers can purchase a mystery book wrapped in paper, with only a hint of the genre revealed—challenging readers to discover a story without judging by its cover.

The Vibe: Warm, Cozy, and Full of Energy
Baristas greet customers with a smile, while the scent of fresh coffee fills the air. The shop hums with conversation, music, and the quiet excitement of people discovering new books.
Tark’s also serves beverages that kids love. Young visitors enjoy chocolate milk, specially mixed sodas, and lemonades, making it a fun gathering place for all ages.
With the right support, Tarkington turned his dream into a reality. “Working with ASBTDC was an easy process,” he shared.
Tark’s Storied Brew is currently open Monday through Saturday. Follow the Tark’s Facebook page for updates, book club events, and more.
